How to Safely Use a Floor Jack?

If you plan on using a floor jack to raise your car, you will need to get acquainted with the precautionary measures that keep you safe as you use the jack. It is not enough to lift a car. You also have to prevent damage to the car and injury to yourself or any other person who might be in the vicinity. Once you decide to repair or maintain your car, you do not want to end up with extra charges to rectify any additional damage or bodily injuries to tend to. In order to avoid this, you need to:

Assess the Ground

Before you start working on your car, you need to assess the ground that you are working on. Is it stable? Does the material underneath support the vehicle properly or is it shaky and prone to sink if a lot of pressure is applied on it? Is it even and flat? You have to ask yourself all these questions before jacking up your car. Flat surfaces provide support for the floor jack which in turn supports your car when it is lifted. Any other ground: slanted or unstable could cause the jack to tip over and fall. This can damage the car extensively or lead to injuries which will need medical attention.

Stop the Car

It is not enough to stop the car on a flat surface. You will also need to ensure that it does not move once you lift it up. To do this, you will need to engage the parking brake. This will stop the back wheels from moving. To ensure that neither the back nor the front wheels move, depending on which side you are going to lift, place wheel chocks underneath each of the wheels that will remain on the ground. This extra support will come in handy regardless of which side of the car you are lifting. If you do not have proper wheel chocks you can replace them with heavy stone or blocks of wood instead. These measures prevent the car from rolling away mid air as the pressure and weight shifts to one side of the vehicle.

Support the Car

Finally, always support the car before you get underneath it. One of the worst things that can happen is for the car to collapse as you are underneath it. This could lead to serious injuries or even death. The surest way to ensure that this does not happen is to buy high quality jack stands. A floor jack is not made to support the weight of the vehicle for long periods of time. This is the work of jack stands. You will therefore need to get some stands whose weight rating is beyond that of your vehicle. Place the stands at appropriate points to provide maximum support to the vehicle. Test if the car is stable before working on it. If it is, you can go ahead and position yourself underneath and do your repairs or maintenance.
